The main difference lies in the drivetrain! While the classic Kombi uses a traditional drivetrain with a derailleur, the Kombi Nexus features an 8-speed Shimano Nexus system housed directly inside the rear hub. The result: minimal maintenance, no risk of derailment, a longer-lasting chain, and the ability to shift gears while stopped so you can always restart in the right gear.
No compromises: the Kombi Nexus is an ultra-adjustable family bike! Its stem, handlebars and seatpost are easily adjusted to accommodate riders from 1.50m to 1.95m (or even up to 2.00m with the saddle raised). If the original seatpost (500mm) proves too long for smaller riders, it can very simply be cut down or replaced with a shorter post.

Thanks to its ultra-sturdy, extended 700mm rear rack and the stability of our Stay Steady Technology geometry, you can comfortably carry up to 2 children (or even 3 depending on their age and size) or an adult passenger. Yes, absolutely! That's one of the biggest advantages of the Shimano Nexus hub. Stopped at a red light in a gear that's too hard? No need to pedal: simply twist the grip to shift into 1st gear while stationary and pull away smoothly, even with 2 kids and the shopping on the back.
Foot support is essential for their balance and comfort. Use the small Pegs footrests for shorter legs, or fit Compact AlloyBoards / Kombi SideBoards footrests from around 6 years of age. ⚠️ Mandatory Safety: It is strictly essential to ride with skirt guards (Wheelskirts) to prevent feet or clothing from touching the spokes or chain. All our new bikes come equipped with them as standard. If buying second-hand, check they are present or order them from our online shop.
Usually around 5 years old. As soon as your child is comfortable on a bike and keeps their balance well, you can switch to a setup with Mini Soft Spot cushions + Monkey Bars + Safety Belts. As a reminder, Thule child seats are approved up to a maximum weight of 22 kg.
The Kombi Nexus supports a maximum total capacity of 200kg (including the rider). Thanks to its rigid, high-strength Chromoly steel frame, you have a payload of 100 to 145kg (depending on your weight) to carry your passengers, weekly groceries or bulky equipment.

Weighing only around twenty kilos without the drag of an off motor, and featuring our Stay Steady Technology geometry alongside a zero-loss Nexus drivetrain, the bike rides with surprising ease. However, if your daily routes are particularly hilly or feature steep climbs, we recommend opting for the Kombi EP5 (its electric version), ideal for tackling hills effortlessly, even when fully loaded!
Technically, yes, fitting a third-party motor kit is possible, but strictly subject to the following conditions: • Motor torque limited to a maximum of 50 Nm: The internal gears of the Shimano Nexus hub are not designed to withstand the high torque of a powerful electric motor (exceeding 50 Nm risks causing irreparable damage to the hub). • Safety and certification: The non-electric Kombi Nexus was designed, tested and certified in accordance with the EN 17860-2 cargo standard. The Nexus 8 is the ideal choice for a reliable everyday family cargo bike.
To ensure maximum lifespan for your Nexus hub, follow one golden rule: ease off the pressure on the pedals for a fraction of a second when shifting gears. The Nexus's internal gears engage even more smoothly when they aren't under heavy pedalling tension.
The Nexus hub is sealed, protecting it from rain, dust and impacts. It requires very little maintenance: we simply recommend an internal service and lubrication by your authorised Yuba dealer every 5,000 km or every 2 years (whichever comes first). Don't forget to check the chain tension and alignment from time to time as well.
Removing the rear wheel (to fix a puncture, for instance) requires a methodical approach to handling the gear control:1. You must shift into 1st gear using the twist shifter. This gives maximum slack to the gear cable. 2. Unhook the gear cable nipple from the cassette joint arm on the hub (no tools required). 3. Loosen the wheel axle nuts and make a careful note of the orientation of the tabbed anti-rotation washers (the small washers with a tab that fit into the frame slot). 4. Gently remove the chain and take out the wheel. 5. When refitting, you must put the tabbed washer back in the correct position and reconnect the cable. Your drivetrain will be instantly set back to its original alignment without any extra adjustments needed\!
